CHICAGO FIRE GET THEIR MAN

The CHICAGO FIRE have signed 29 year old Brazilian central defender Marcelo from Sporting CPA.  Bola has reported that the transfer yielded a €500,000 fee.

The majority of his professional career has been spent with Rio Ave in Portugal where he’s made 198 appearances. Early in his professional career, Marcelo earned Player of the Year honors in 2012-13.  Marcelo appeared in only one game for Sporting this past season.

When asked about the acquisition of Marcelo, the club had this to say. “Marcelo will add necessary leadership along our back line,” Fire president and general manager Nelson Rodriguez said in a media release. “He is a smart defender who participates in every phase of the game. He is known as a solid teammate and he is driven to win, which fits our locker room well.”  The Fire are looking to get back to their winning ways in the 2019 campaign and Marcelo should be a large part of their efforts to continue to improve.
